And they need to build a lot of them because if you think finding a parking space can sometimes be hard enough, imagine having to find one of the few with an electric cable.

Tesla is currently working on electric induction pads for their chargers. No cable required. Existing model cars would need an adaptor to be installed. Then simply drive near or over the induction pad to get a charge.

I often wonder why a socket is not provided on charging stations, so EV owners can use their own cable to plug in. Of course thieves could steal cables from privately owned vehicles. I have owned a non-Tesla EV for the last 5 years, but never carry my cable because I charge at home. Rarely charge elsewhere unless hundreds of miles away.

There is also another device that is basically a giant battery on wheels. It does require a human attendant to physically move it and attach it to your car. But one person can manage a dozen or more of these. The job mostly just “waiting around” and the occasional plug in or plug out. Otherwise ride around the parking lot, or, return the battery to be recharged for future use.
