Straphanger is the proper term used in NYC for those who ride the subway standing up, holding on to the overhead straps to maintain their balance as the train bounces around. Trains will frequently be filled beyond the seating capacity. During rush hour, they may fill the standing area like sardines. Straphanger is not a derogatory term in the city.
As for the station at Houston and Varik streets, there is no street in Manhattan named after Sam Houston. It is pronounced House-ton street.
