And tomorrow is the 44th time it's officially called Memorial Day. I am old enough to remember Decoration Day.
44th? It was first officially called Memorial Day in 1971, 53 years ago. I had never heard it called Decoration Day, so I looked it up. On History.com, they write “in 1968, Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May in order to create a three-day weekend for federal employees. The change went into effect in 1971. The same law also declared Memorial Day a federal holiday.”
