Rishi Sunak has said he will introduce a new form of mandatory National Service for young people if the Conservatives win the general election.
In the first new policy announcement of the campaign, the prime minister has unveiled a plan that would see 18-year-olds given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year.
The placement would be selective - with tests used to decide who is eligible - and involve working with the armed forces or in cyber defence.
The volunteering option would see young people spending 25 days with organisations such as the police, the fire service, the NHS, or charities that work with older isolated people.
Mr Sunak said the new model would provide "life-changing opportunities for young people" and allow them to learn "real world skills".

The UK has not had conscription or selective service since 1939!
The US maintains a system and used a lottery (”the draft”) in the 60s and 70s.

Maybe England is having recruitment problems just like America is. Ours is probably down mainly due to Trans policies, DEI zealots, less unity of purpose.
It’s just a matter of time before some version of involuntary national service becomes a serious topic of discussion.
Yes the US govt’ maintains a database and a government department (SSS).

Indeed. Running on a platform of mandatory conscription (more or less) would appear to be electoral suicide.

While this is merely floating a campaign issue the problem of the draft for Ulrainian men is very real. Here is a recent articule on it: ‘Everyone will fight.’ Ukrainian men weigh their options as new draft law comes into effect."
It is my belief that no draft is remotely possible in modern day USA. The fabric of the nation is frayed. I would never permit or encourage my son to go serve under a regime as evil and corrupt as Biden-Obama-Bush.

In any case, it doesn’t matter as he’ll be wiped out in their election in 6 weeks...but as the Brits will learn the hard way, his replacement will likely do EXACTLY the same regarding Ukraine.
