How does this end? With Hamas holding firm and fighting back in Gaza, Israel faces only bad options

Diminished but not deterred, Hamas is still putting up a fight after seven brutal months of war with Israel, regrouping in some of the hardest-hit areas in northern Gaza and resuming rocket attacks into nearby Israeli communities.

Israel initially made tactical advances against Hamas after a devastating aerial bombardment paved the way for its ground troops. But those early gains have given way to a grinding struggle against an adaptable insurgency — and a growing feeling among many Israelis that their military faces only bad options, drawing comparisons with U.S. wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

They supported Israel’s retaliation for Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack, including one of the heaviest bombing campaigns in recent history, ground operations that obliterated entire neighborhoods and border restrictions that the U.N.'s World Food Program says pushed parts of the territory into famine.

But now the two retired generals fear a prolonged, costly re-occupation of Gaza, from which Israel withdrew soldiers and settlers in 2005. They are also opposed to a withdrawal that would leave Hamas in control or lead to the establishment of a Palestinian state.

Instead, they have put forth alternatives that many Israelis see as wildly unrealistic. Hamas, meanwhile, has proposed its own postwar plan.

Maybe. But imagine Gaza is like Chechnya but with tunnels. And this time the whole world is watching.

30 years ago, there was no social media. And Russia is not dependent on the West.

Supply Israel whatever weapons they need.

Step back and Bibi and the IDF will end Hamas.

Only way to handle this.

Kill every single member of Hamas. Next, kill every single person who gave aid and comfort to Hamas. Problem solved.

We don’t do anything.

Only supply weapons to Israel.

“Next, kill every single person who gave aid and comfort to Hamas. Problem solved.”
Are you advocating for eliminating the whole Biden Administration?

Egypt will be happy to help us do that on their border. They have cooperated with Israel on that a long time.

We have ways of identifying the tunnels. Use them and help Israel with intelligence.

Stop back stabbing Bibi and the IDF.

Egypt hasn't been so cooperative. One major reason the IDF had to go into Rafah was to shut down the tunnels. They've been open and operating freely since the war the began. One major resupply route for Gaza during the war has been from Egypt, through the tunnels, to Rafah.

Bibi is not going to last long. The next Israeli PM will declare victory.

Much to the US State Department's disappointment, Bibi doesn't have to call another election until October 2026. If he can't finish off Hamas by then, then he deserves to be fired.

With terrorists — like Hamas and Hezbollah — you kill them, and you keep killing them, until they’re no longer a threat. That’s what you do.

Do the AP reporters have any brains at all?

Comparing the situation in the Gaza strip to Iraq or Afghanistan shows an utter lack of geographic knowledge.

Iraq covers almost 170,000 square miles. Afghanistan covers about 250,000 square miles, much of it in remote, mountainous areas. The Gaza strip covers 141 square miles.

Two sides of the Gaza strip are next to Israel, and the third is ocean. The fourth size is controlled by Egypt and it is all of 7.5 miles long.

Israel's army can easily cut up the Gaza strip into sections, and to the extent necessary isolate and eliminate any opposition.

There are large numbers of civilians, who will need food, water, and other temporary support, but Gaza is too small for insurgents to successfully hide from the Israeli army.

IF anyone believes “in signs”——

The ‘Pier” Biden built for aid delivery broke free in heavy waves & landed in Israel territory.

GOD has a better sense of humor than we give HIM credit for

Tunnels aren't so useful once they are filled up with water.

“Bibi is not going to last long.”

Over the past two months support has gone from “We want him gone” to being the preferred as Prime Minister.

Two months ago he was down 9. Last month down 5. Now:

According to the Channel 12 poll Sunday, 38 percent of the public preferred Netanyahu as prime minister, while 37% percent preferred former defense minister Benny Gantz in a head-to-head matchup.

I think the Israeli plan was to just make Gaza uninhabitable, and force everybody to emigrate.
