They simply wanted to serve our country, you don’t have to work so hard to denigrate those of us who enlisted in the military during the Vietnam War era.
As far as getting into elite units, draftees can seek those if they can meet the standards and many did.

. . . and I'd like to raise it to age 26 unless you are self-supporting in a full-time job and paying taxes. H3ll, those last two should be a requirement at any age under 60.

Harry Truman did a few things I liked very much one of the things he did not do was lower the voting age in fact when asked about lowering voting age to 18 he replied that it would make more sense to raise it to 25.
In spite of his protestations his daughter was ugly and she couldn't sing. That aside Harry did not demonstrate any signs of massive fraud as most all do today. He refused secret service protection and moved back to his home town and moved into his mother-in-law's home.
