It is my view that Conservatives have always had an uphill battle in the Republican party.
There was a very brief period when Newt Gingrich was speaker that Conservatives held he upper hand, but the statist Republicans soon enough pushed him out with the help of the Democrats.
The Republican Party has since the days of TDR been a big government party and the Conservatives are the revolutionaries.
