But wasn’t it true there was a huge push to get the Boy Scouts to stop being “homophobic” and to allow gay staff? Then they did. Then the multimillion dollar lawsuits started about gay staff molesting boys. Then the Boy Scouts declined and went broke.
Is that accurate?
Fairly accurate, but the sexual assault lawsuits were only part of it. Sharply declining membership because of these changes were the nail in the coffin. The Mormon Church sponsorship completely pulled out several years ago, and they had massive representation.
BSA was already impacted by gay predator lawsuits in the 1970s.
It took a while for widespread realization of how large the problem was, in this respect the RCC problem is quite similar.
I was in BSA 1961-1968 and had two (of two) homosexual scoutmasters, one was fired and one went to prison. The biggest obstacle in that much simpler time was having the other adult leaders, most of whom were WW II veterans, actually realize the existence of what to them was literally unbelievable.
