My advisor in college was Dr. Robert Gallman. He was one of the foremost experts on the economics of slavery. It was not dying as fast as you would believe.

Interestingly enough, the slaves actually received about 40-50% of the value of their labor.

Brazil formally got rid of slavery in 1888 and Cuba had done so in 1886. These were the last two holdouts in the Western Hemisphere. The Europeans had gotten rid of it throughout their colonial empires by the late 1860s. Do you contend it would have lasted longer in the Southern states of the US than it did everywhere else in the West? I was aware many slave owners would rent out their slaves for what amounted to contract labor and allow the slaves to keep a significant portion of the wages. That's how some slaves saved up the money to purchase their freedom.
