Saudi authorities have permitted the use of lethal force to clear land for a futuristic desert city being built by dozens of Western companies, an ex-intelligence officer has told the BBC.
Col Rabih Alenezi says he was ordered to evict villagers from a tribe in the Gulf state to make way for The Line, part of the Neom eco-project.
One of them was subsequently shot and killed for protesting against eviction.
The Saudi government and Neom management refused to comment.
Neom, Saudi Arabia's $500bn (£399bn) eco-region, is part of its Saudi Vision 2030 strategy which aims to diversify the kingdom's economy away from oil.
Its flagship project, The Line, has been pitched as a car-free city, just 200m (656ft) wide and 170km (106 miles) long - though only 2.4km of the project is reportedly expected to be completed by 2030.
Dozens of global companies, several of them British, are involved in Neom's construction.
The area where Neom is being built has been described as the perfect "blank canvas" by Saudi leader Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman

I doubt they will create a desirable place to live (in the desert) no matter what they do they're still despotic regimes and not really Free states.
[... Forces ‘told to kill’ to clear land for ...]
This is exactly what the new CEO of Thorn Industries was doing to take over farm land - if the land owners wouldn’t sell, they were eliminated
“Damien: Omen II”
The CEO wasn’t the Antichrist - but he was installed to help him and assist him (the movie is fiction, of course)
The scientist discovered the murders - so he died when the valve malfunctioned on P-84
Spread this story to all those anti Israel protesters. Let them know what happens to those who protest in the middle east.
And these are the “good” muslims!
Fair point.
What do you think Drago? “Ghost” city or desirable place to live?
They’re spending a sh*t load on it
Multiple projects in the “NEOM” “district” (NW Saudi)(the size of Belgium)....as for “The Line” city are they selling condos? Selling “parcels”? Moving Saudi citizens in for free? I would have to look into it further before making a call on “doomed” or not.
Sounds like what was done in Lahaina to make way for their “Smart City.”
“...just 200m (656ft) wide and 170km (106 miles) long...”
Seems like an odd shape. Even with a bullet train it doesn’t seem reasonable. I’ll have to look into it.
A suburb of Seattle is wanting to get part of the suburb to become a “Smart City”. Another suburb is creating a “15-Minute City”. I think they are distinct types of “cities”, but one could have a “15-minute Smart City” as well.
I remember back in the good-ol-days when UN Agenda 21 was just viewed by most people as a crazy conspiracy theory some of us conservatives dreamed up.
The Smart City and 15-minute cities are basically the same concept. People are still digging up info on Lahaina and have produced maps for the planned project, which have revealed plans for a transportation corridor, metro rail, canal system, etc exactly in the areas that were burned and currently in process of being taken by eminent domain. Those people were massacred because they refused to be bought out and give up their land.
I was in Saudi Arabia for Desert Shield/Desert Storm. We where in a village built on the edge of a desert built for Bedouins. The Bedouins were not interested in living there so the village was rotting in the desert. Very strange. It was my understanding that there where many of these villages.
The area where Neom is being built has been described as the perfect “blank canvas” by Saudi leader Crown Prince Mohamed bin Salman
Blank, except for those pesky people who actually live there. What a damning statement from this “leader”.
>>“...just 200m (656ft) wide and 170km (106 miles) long...”
And they are targeting having a population of 9 million in that area (264706 per square km), giving it a population density somewhere around 9 times that of Calcutta; or over 6 times that of Manilla.
Insanity.
Who wouldn’t want to live in a narrow desert prison surrounded by islamics?
I doubt you'd want to litter in their newly-built, perfect city.
Yes I suspect its going to be a vanity/flop?? This is my thoughts anyway on these “projects” and there are loads popping up
They’re spending trillions on these and pinning their hopes on it diversifying from oil.
I dont know...
A CITY 656’ WIDE???
I live rural on 630 X 389 5.58 acres.
