Here’s some irony for you. Dollar Shave Club and Dave’s were both in the razor section at Safeway and Walgreens today!
Yeah that is ironic, but, dollar shave club was purchased by unilever - a major consumer goods company. So they probably bought it to ‘edge’ their way into the market heavily dominated by Gillette. Unilever then spun it off to some venture capital but still have 35% of it maybe because they have the weight at these major retail companies with all their other brands. The major companies pretty much control 90% the shelf space. It’s widely known inside that these companies collude to divvy up the space. It’s why companies like P&G and JNJ have made agreements to swap their consumer brands and deals like that. They agreed not to compete in various categories. The retailers do have staff that are supposed to decide what products get the space but they are in cahoots with the big brands. DSC made a name for themselves outside the boys club and still needed unilever before they got onto retail shelves.
