Absolutely correct. A recent comment pointed out that Mark Twain in his “Innocents Abroad” noticed how that region was largely an empty wasteland.
He saw how impoverished and backward the entire Middle East was and he blamed the Ottoman Turks. He missed the larger reason, that the problem was Islam. The problem then and the problem to this day.
