A university spokesman confirmed to me that UNC students reported these threats to hold grades hostage to UNC administrators.
In response, UNC Provost Chris Clemens and Graduate School Dean Beth Mayer-Davis sent a formal written statement to all university deans and department chairs and said the provost’s office “will support sanctions” against any instructor or professor who “is found to have improperly withheld grades.”
They also said the threat to hold student grades hostage violates “our contract with the people of North Carolina” and noted that submitting grades is “part of the required duties of all faculty and graduate TAs[.]”
