If you are behind a self braking car and it suddenly brake checks you, who gets blamed for the rear end collision?

Mercedes beats Tesla, sells Level 3 autonomous cars on US soil | Mercedes began offering autonomous driving in Germany in May 2022 and debuted the service in the US in December last year.

Scroll down to comment by DocPhilMcGraw:

The reason Level 3 driving is important is because this is the first time that the vehicle itself is liable for driving versus Level 2 in which the person driving is still supposed to be supervising the system at all times and is notably still liable for any accidents that occur.

It also allows you to LEGALLY take your eyes off the road to perform other tasks like watching a video unlike current systems available on the market.

The reason it’s limited to 40 MPH and specific roads is exactly because of both regulations and Mercedes wanting to ensure the system operates properly before expanding the limitations further (because again they’ve stated they are liable for any accidents that occur while the system is active).
