All that said, what “should” have happened to the dog?

Train the dog. Until the dog is trained, she could have placed it in an area away from chickens. It isn't that difficult .

As for the ornery castrated goat that liked to chase children. 1) keep children away from the goat. 2) castrate the goat. 3) Also, the article said she had to shoot the goat multiple times to kill it. I would suggest that she should brush up on her marksmanship.

I’m happy to see that someone else knows that male goats are dangerous unless neutered. And if you can’t keep a bird dog away from chickens-trained or not-you give the dog to a rescue to be found a new home-pointers are not cheap, and are popular dogs...
