One explanation of the difference between a "raid" and a "search":

A raid is the execution of a search warrant with the element of surprise because there is a reasonable likelihood that the people and place to be searched will use force to resist the search and/or destroy potential evidence. So, a search warrant has to be issued before a raid can occur. But the execution of a search warrant does not always require a raid, such as in the case of the defendant already being arrested and then a warrant is given to search the person’s vehicle that was parked near the scene of the arrest (eg, a hotel parking lot).
