RFK Jr dismisses Trump as ‘unhinged’ after being called a ‘Democrat plant’
The Guardian ^ | Ramon Antonio Vargas

Robert F Kennedy Jr has dismissed Donald Trump as “unhinged” after a social media tirade from the former Republican president accused the independent White House hopeful of being a “Democrat plant” and “wasted protest vote”. “When frightened men take to social media they risk descending into vitriol, which makes them sound unhinged,” Kennedy wrote Saturday on X in a post that doubled as a debate challenge. “President Trump’s rant against me is a barely coherent barrage of wild and inaccurate claims that should best be resolved in the American tradition of presidential debate.”

Trump being Trump. But I don’t see how antagonizing RFK Jr and his supporters is helpful. Why not just ignore him or talk about the common ground they have?

RFK Junior is going nowhere. At least so far.

But if it ever looks like he might spoil it for the Democrats, he will meet the same fate as his father.

RFKjr has a base like Trump that will not be moved. Not nearly as big, but still a base. Who he “steals” the most votes from is yet to be determined. That Trump paid any attention to him shows an element of concern.

Totally agree. I’ve been surprised some conservatives have given him some consideration.

Trump accusing Kennedy of not actually believing in what he says about vaccines is funny when you remember Trump asked Kennedy to lead a health commission and then killed it after Big Pharma gave Trump millions of dollars. Bill Gates also said Trump asked him about whether he should work with Kennedy and Gates encouraged him not to.

That’s the question. Did Trump see a possible exposure that needed to be addressed?

> Trump being Trump. <

Yes, indeed. And his outbursts are usually not helpful (just my opinion).

But in this case, his outburst is helpful. Some conservatives have been looking favorably at RFK Jr. Maybe that’s because he’s a rebel. Maybe that’s because of his anti-vax stance. Some polls have even suggested that RFK Jr. might hurt Trump more than Biden.

RFK Jr would have been wise to let Trump’s outburst pass. But instead he called Trump unhinged. That will lose him some supporters, supporters who have a favorable opinion of Trump.

Did Trump plan this all out ahead of time? Probably not.

Correct. Kennedy’s support isn’t large. Neither was Nader’s in 2000. In a tight race, every vote matters. Spoilers matter.

Indeed: if the vote isn’t stolen again. Trump just won the election!

Rfk needs to split Biden and he just solidified that.

Trump apparently sees a problem if he wouldn’t waste the time of day on him. My guess, it would be younger Trump leaning antivaxers. And of course, the usual looney Dems. But Trump spending any energy is telling. C

If they vote for RFK, Jr. simply because he’s anti-vax, and don’t know anything about his being a liberal environmentalist wacko, then who wants their vote?

Candidates win by getting votes that ideologues don’t want — or in this case, candidates lose because they don’t get the votes that ideologues don’t want.

To put RFK to the left of Biden and draw more leftist ideologues to RFK as a spoiler.
