Animal rights nonprofit group PETA has strongly condemned Gov. Kristi Noem (R-SD) after she recently shared a story about her killing her 14-month-old dog, “Cricket,” for his lousy hunting skills.
The story is published in her book No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward and was intended to show that when it came to politics or personal life, she wasn’t afraid of getting “messy and ugly.” It instead garnered sharp criticism from animal lovers everywhere.
“Most Americans love their dogs, and we suspect that they will consider Gov. Noem a psychotic loony for letting this rambunctious puppy loose on chickens and then punishing her by deciding to personally blow her brains out rather than attempting to train her or find a more responsible guardian who would provide her with a proper home,” PETA Senior Director Colleen O’Brien said in a statement to the Washington Examiner. “Gov. Noem obviously fails to understand the vital political concepts of education, cooperation, compromise, and compassion.
Noem decided to shoot Cricket after the dog killed a local family’s chickens after a pheasant hunting trip and then bit her when she tried to intervene. Noem said she “hated that dog” and deemed it “less than worthless” for being unable to hunt properly.
After taking the dog to a gravel pit and shooting it, she also shot a goat she owned, which she said stunk and was “nasty and mean.”
Unfortunately 90% of Americans are too far removed from their rural forefathers to understand why she did what she did. I grew up in the country and would have done the same. Dogs that kill chickens or chase livestock get put down, you’re not going to reform them after they’ve started. Those that say it’s a training problem are showing their ignorance. Unfortunately ignorance is a pretty common trait in urban America today and this won’t play well with low information voters.
The dog was not killed because he could not hunt. He was killed because he could not be trusted around livestock. I doubt he could have been rehomed to another farm or ranch.

Later on, her daughter arrived home and asked where Cricket was.
“Kennedy looked around confused,” Noem writes of her daughter, who asked, “Hey, where’s Cricket?”
When Trump passes on her you will fault Trump!
My brother had to put a problematic dog down, and he just lied to the kids: "...We gave him to a couple who live on a farm...he gets to run around all day..."
Why? Because she’s stupid, And cruel,.End of national political career.
Needed to be Dale Evans not
Roy Rodgers.
Normal, for out in the country.
Any dog that kills livestock or runs deer are summarily shot.
This one was uncontrollable and bit her, when she intervened in it's blood frenzy.
America is full of whiny, emotionally incontinent morons.
Not sure about the goat, but the dog seems to have been a bad choice to acquire [though its training could be suspect].
She needs to breed and train her own dogs.
PETA, the folks who claims to not euthanize pets but does???
Funny coming from PETA, considering how many dogs they kill.
Everyone isn’t reacting to her book, because it won’t be published until May the 7th.
They’re reacting excerpts that got leaked by the Guardian.
Excerpts that have been selectively curated for maximum outrage, mind you.
“putting it down might have been justified but to do it yourself with a gun is a bit radical.”
Any hardscrabble old farmer knows you don’t want to waste ammunition on a dog so you take them over to the horse trough for a drowning. At the very least #4 buck at close range. But taking pot shots with a rifle or a pistol is a gamble and prone to a messy wounding.
PETA euthanizes about 57% of all dogs they take in about 70% of all cats.
Who’s the lunatics?
When a coyote kills your chickens it’s considered a nuisance animal.. dog does it you put them down as well.
Pretty standard.
Dogs bite. Especially young dogs. If she didn’t like the dog enough to take it to a trainer she could have taken it to a shelter.
Killing it the way she did ends her political career. Probably a good thing,
I agree; she just got knocked off my VP list, still headed by J.D. Vance.
Well, she should have left those animal killings out of her book. Silence is golden; don’t tell everything you know.
