California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt announced Friday that all classes and school business will be conducted remotely for the rest of the semester amid a student occupation on campus protesting the ongoing war in Gaza.
University officials extended the closure of the campus until May 10 — the end of the semester — saying instruction would continue to be remote, after protesters at the university in northern California used furniture, tents, chains and zip ties to block entrances to an academic and administrative building on Monday.
Commencement at the school is currently scheduled for May 11.
Officials said in a statement Tuesday that students had occupied a second building and three students had been arrested. On Wednesday, officials said some unidentified people who were not students were also inside one of the occupied buildings. On Thursday, the university said protesters continued to occupy the two buildings.
A dean at the school, Jeff Crane, suggested during the meeting that the university form a committee that would include students to do a deep dive into the school's investments. Crane also suggested faculty and students continue meeting every 24 hours to keep an open line of communication. The sides have yet to announce an agreement.

So the protests were effective.
Interesting solution to their little problem.
Maybe Columbia and NYU can go with this. Kind of a re-boot of the COVID response strategy that worked so well.
Not a bad solution.
They need to have a plan for when the students come back to campus. They'll just come back and protest in the fall. It's election year after all.
J6 protesters are going to jail and/or facing large fines, often for just entering the Capitol for a few minutes and standing around talking with other Trump supporters. But these protestors are being allowed to shut down the campus for weeks, apparently with no penalty whatsoever.
Definitely. That’s the best way to treat a bunch of spoiled juvenile delinquents, viz. shut down the entire institution. That’ll show ‘em! /s
All these colleges are learning the wrong lesson from COVID. You don’t keep the right people out because of an infection; you get rid of the infection, by any legal means necessary.
There should be a massive mobilization of Guardsmen surrounding and removing these encampments. Follow the tactics of MacArthur in 1932; in that case you could argue that the veterans had a valid gripe, but in this case it’s anti-American insurrection (where have we heard THAT before?).
It’s an adaptation of the very modern “lead from behind” strategy.
i call on these campus insurrectionists to keep up their good work!
if ya’ll can paralyze this university long enough, maybe they’ll be forced to close permanently, thereby eliminating one more state-funded Marxist factory dedicated to poisoning the minds of our youth!
It's up to Governor Newsom to order the National Guard to restore civil order.
There’s a presidential election coming so yes, this foolishness is rearing up yet again.
Anarchy benefits the Democratic Party.
Yup, terrorism, at least in this case, worked.
So you give in and close the school based on a few demonstrators. What about the rest of the students, do they lose out on a whole semester and will you be refunding their expenses because of your Stupidity?
This goes back further than COVID.
There were widespread closings of college campuses after the Kent State shootings in 1970.
The President of the school can't really arrest the demonstrators. Once he does that, he'll get ousted from his office immediately.
That, and the feminist mantra, “I don’t need a father figure for my children. I’ll raise them on my own. Just keep the welfare dollars coming.”
They are not pro-Palestinian protests, they are hate Israel protests. Don’t let the leftist enemedia label the narrative!
Until about two years ago, Cal Poly Humboldt was known as Humboldt State University. No relation to Humboldt University in East Berlin, other than that they are both named after Alexander von Humboldt. The one in East Berlin is probably much less woke, so it’s likely a better choice if you’re looking for a college to attend.
Four dead in O-hi-o. Too damned few, and the wrong ones to boot.
