At the first sign of actual war, all those countries will eject from NATO and declare themselves neutral.

Exercise Campaign Reforger ("REturn of FORces to GERmany") was an annual military exercise and campaign conducted by NATO during the Cold War. The exercise was intended to ensure that NATO had the ability to quickly deploy forces to West Germany in the event of a conflict with the Warsaw Pact.I was stationed in the Azores Islands which was a middle of the North Atlantic stopover for aircraft in transit. The had a giant hanger with coke machines down one side to give the soldiers and marines a place to stretch their legs while the aircraft were refueled and maintained.
I got to see the first flight of A-10's going over, but only from afar on top of the hill above the flight line and pads next to the Naval Air Facility.
In the Azores now we have about 100 US military personnel on station. The US part of the Portuguese Air Base number 4 is a ghost town fallen into ruin. Video is on YouTube.
