TALLAHASSEE, Florida — Rep. Bill Posey (R-Fla.) abruptly announced on Friday that he will not seek reelection, after initially planning to run for another term.
Posey’s announcement — if made earlier — could have easily attracted a spirited Republican primary, with politicians from the state’s Space Coast region already eyeing the seat once Posey retired. Florida’s 8th congressional district is a solid Republican seat.
Instead the 76-year-old incumbent’s announcement came shortly after qualifying officially ended and after his hand-picked replacement — former state Senate President Mike Haridopolos — had already quietly jumped into the race.
In a statement posted online, Posey said that he was “looking forward to another spirited campaign for a final term in office. However, earlier this week circumstances beyond my control now require me to suspend my re-election campaign.”
Posey did not elaborate what caused his turnabout. He’s one of roughly two dozen Republican incumbents not returning to the lower chamber next year — all in safe seats — an unusually high number for a party in the majority.

They hate their base more than they hate Democrats.
Deep State scores another one. “Six ways from Sunday.”
Our entire government hates its citizens and doing everything they can to subjugate us. What we are witnessing with the vile attacks against Trump is an example of what they will do to us except it will be a lot worse
Fixed it for ya.
Rats trying to slink away and escape punishment in the hopes their crimes will never be discovered
This elderly conservative Republican is certain to be replaced by a much younger conservative Republican, so, uhhhh.... I guess we should all panic?
I think it’s the underhanded way he’s doing it basically ensuring his hand picked successor gets to replace him.
Someone made Posey an offer he couldn’t refuse?!?
Exactly. These geriatric Boomer politicians need to go enjoy their retirements already.
Bring in people who will actually live long enough to enjoy the consequences of the legislation they pass.
Perhaps, but seeing as how Posey actually ISN’T some GOPe squish and you’d have to look long and hard to find something non-conservative about Haridopolous’ term in the FL Senate, this seems like a good move.
Much better than a primary with a bunch of wannabees splitting the right-wing vote and letting some squish similar to John Rutherford, Mike Waltz, Vern Buchanan, Carlos Gimenez, Maria Salazar, etc. become the next new congressman from Florida.
A real conservative getting elected would be refreshing.
BINGO on steroids!
Precisely. Democracy in action — bullscheisse.
Keeping the power among the royalty and perfumed princes.
I’m increasing my prediction from D+35 to D+41.
It may get a lot worse before November.
Perhaps this was Posey's plan to prevent a party selected squish from getting the seat?
I've also read that back in 2008 when Posey first sought his current seat, he offered to stand back and endorse Haridopolous. Regardless, it seems he is quite conservative, and not a nutjob. That he named one of his children Reagan is a bonus.
Nasty little trick. He should be automatically disqualified for attempting to gain the position by unethical behavior.
Or it could be he has no business running again at 76. They don’t call congress the largest geriatric facility for nothing.
What you’re doing is mentally preparing yourself. No way it’s that high. D +8 in the house - also Democrats lose the Senate and win the presidency.
I think the relevant point was highlighted in bold type.
Doesn’t matter. He’s too old. Time to retire. He may be dying for all we know.
