Today was the first day of the ‘hush money’ trial in New York, and President Trump has already made an interesting, calculated move.
In an unusual maneuver, Trump is requesting to personally join sidebar discussions.
Typically, these are private, off-the record conversations between the judge and attorneys. They often contain sensitive or intimate information that they don’t want the jury or public to hear.
CNN had this to say about sidebars during the hush money trial:
The historic trial of former President Donald Trump is expected to include a lot of objections and sidebars, sources told CNN chief legal affairs correspondent Paula Reid.
Sidebar conversations are usually issues that attorneys want to resolve outside the presence of the jury or potential jurors, Reid explained. They are usually sensitive issues that could be related to evidence being brought up.
In this case, the defense are using sidebars because they are focused on preserving every issue for appeal, according to Reid.
Instead of having his lawyers do it for him, President Trump wants to participate in every sidebar himself.
It is extremely rare for a defendant in a case to do this. Traditionally, only attorneys attend sidebar conversations.
As part of jury selection, the judge can also use sidebars to ask potential jurors personal questions.

Don’t hold your breath…corruption runs deep and vile!
I do not know what to make of this.
Was getting rid of the statute of limitations to prosecute one man a “rare legal move” ?
Was a state prosecutor undertaking the prosecution of a federal offense that the federal prosecutor declined to move on a “rare legal move” ?
This is a big deal?
This guy’s lawyers suck. These cases should have been nipped in the bud.
Oh, you don’t think that’s possible?
Imagine for one minute how far a case would have gotten if a Southern DA and judge pulled this against Obama.
You think Obama would be on court everyday fighting for his freedom?
These cases are a joke - and his lawyers think it is a big victory if they can get Trump included on a sidebar?
These lawyers suck.
Good. The defendant should be allowed.
Hey! What are you doing still posting all of your armchair QB legal advice, on FR, tonight?
I thought I asked you, earlier, to fly to NYC, to meet with Pres Trump’s legal team, Legal Beagle Fido.
🙃
If I did, I’d tell them to get their heads out of their butts, and stop sucking for a moment.
Also explain to me how it was ANOTHER defense team that figured out the Fani Willis scam.
Trump’s guys couldn’t figure it out?
I listen to them spewing legal minutiae while being unable to get a handle on the big issues.
400 million dollar judgement? How could they have possibly done worse?
They suck.
Get up off of that couch and go help them, then!
Whining on this forum won’t get things fixed, Fido.
C’mon, man ... do it for the country!! They need you....they reeeallly, really need you.
Even if this is initially permitted, it will last only until the first time Trump complains about something that occurred during a sidebar on social media. Then the judge will ban him.
Your comments and understanding of what’s going on is what sucks. It’s a kangaroo court and Merchan and Bragg are stacking everything against Trump. Your Obama analogy is not only ridiculous, it’s embarrassing. Trump’s best hope here is to find 1 juror that will vote to acquit, and absent that, having the entire conviction overturned on appeal.
Trump dozed off in the court room. 🤣🤣. Mocking is what they deserve.
You can’t ban him from participating in his own defense.
Maybe he also thinks his own team aren't expert in how large construction companies book business expenses and he wants to make sure that sidebars that discuss the legal approach are made with proper subject matter knowledge about the charges being adjudicated?

Stop making excuses for these guys charging outrageous amounts, diddling around and getting their butts kicked.
