Israel describes Iran's 350-missile attack as a 'declaration of war' and vows more 'offensive and defensive action'

Israel has described Iran's unprecedented 350-missile attack as a 'declaration of war' and confirmed it has approved plans for 'offensive and defensive action'.

The country's president Isaac Herzog insisted that Israel did not want a war but suggested they would retaliate after Iran's audacious airstrike early on Sunday.

He said it was 'about time the world faces this empire of evil in Tehran' and makes it clear that its behaviour is 'unacceptable'.

President Herzog told Sky News: 'It's a declaration of war... we are considering all options and I'm quite confident we will take the necessary steps to protect and defend our people.'

Tehran had signalled that an attack was coming in retaliation for an airstrike on its diplomatic compound in Damascus, Syria, that killed two top Iranian generals earlier this month.

IDF Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari accused Iran of trying to 'ignite the Middle East and escalate the region' by firing 60 tonnes of suicide drones, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and rockets at Israel overnight - but insisted his army was on 'high alert'.

'Over the last two hours, we approved operational plans for both offensive and defensive action,' he told reporters on Sunday. 'We will continue to protect the State of Israel, and together with our partners, we will continue to build a more secure and stable future for the entire Middle East.'

The IDF spokesman said Iran's plan had 'failed' - as he praised the response from the 'regional alliance' which helped down '99 per cent' of the missiles fired. He did not elaborate on the approved plans, but it came after a meeting of Israel's war cabinet.

Leaders of the G7 - including UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak - also held talks on Sunday in which they 'unequivocally' condemned Iran's attack on Israel and warned...

Yes, now is the time.
I hope they don’t miss this golden and unique opportunity to at least TRY to eliminate Iran’s nuclear program.

Iran has been at war with the US since 1979. In 1953, we restored their constitutional monarchy

Nonsense. In 1953 we instigated a coup against their democratically elected leader and put our man back into power.

You are a little confused. Shah Reza Shah Pahlavi was overthrown in 1941, when the British and Soviet invaded Iran and forced him to resign in favor of his son Mohammad Reza Pahlavi. That was a coup.
Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh tried to usurp power from the shah by naming the Minister of War and the Chief of Staff. He was forced to step down and then used protests as an excuse to regain power and declare a state of emergency during which, he arrested members of the Shahs family and trying to illegally isolate teh shah from speaking with foreign leaders. Mossedegh then tried to extend the state of emergency from 6 to 12 months. The British and CIA then stepped in to end his dictatorship

True so far, Reza Shah had ties to Nazi Germany, leading to fears he might join them. Whether that was true or not is another discussion and is outside the scope of this topic.

Prime Minister Mohammad Mosaddegh tried to usurp power from the shah by naming the Minister of War and the Chief of Staff.

He did no such thing. He was a popular national figure who was democratically elected to office. Well, as democratically as Iran was at the time, as you'll see in the link. This resulted in instability, as the Shah didn't want to give up power and the allies didn't want to give up their influence.

He pushed for many reforms in Iran, one of which was to nationalize Iran's oil industry. That would have had a major impact on British and American influence in the area, and the US couldn't have that. Authorized by Eisenhower, the CIA instigated a coup that overthrew his government and put the Shah back in power, practically as dictator.

The CIA has acknowledged all of this. There's plenty from a search here.

Before anyone asks, none of this justifies Iran's attacks on Israel or should be used as arguments against Israel retaliating.

Just because Mosaddegh was democratically elected does not mean he had not over stepped with attempts to take over teh military and choose the chief of staff. The Shah’s father had been an officer, who overthrew the Qajar dynasty and he was not going to give up command of the military. Either way, you completely ignore his actions after he Mosaddegh returned to power and took on dictatorial emergency powers.

Just because Mosaddegh was democratically elected

That's right, he was. That's supposed to mean something to conservatives.

does not mean he had not over stepped with attempts to take over teh military and choose the chief of staff.

Sources?

BTW, you sound like the leftists who accused President Trump of interfering with foreign policy when, as president, he was the one who set foreign policy.

The Shah’s father had been an officer, who overthrew the Qajar dynasty and he was not going to give up command of the military.

And?

Either way, you completely ignore his actions after he Mosaddegh returned to power and took on dictatorial emergency powers.

There was an emergency in that the Shah did not want to give up his power and the UK and US did not want to give up their ability to exploit Iran's oil, and were instigating a coup for that purpose. In doing so, we gave the Shah dictatorial powers, something you don't seem to have a problem with when our side does it.
