Legacy media outlets have drawn criticism over their framing of an incident in Chicago where a 26-year-old man was killed by police after he fired at officers who had pulled him over for a traffic stop last month, according to an initial investigation and body camera footage.
Dexter Reed was killed after police pulled him over for a traffic stop in Chicago on March 21 after officers said he was not wearing a seatbelt. When officers attempted to speak with him, Reed locked himself in his vehicle and gunfire broke out leading officers to run away from the vehicle. According to the preliminary investigation from the civilian-operated Chicago Office of Police Accountability, Reed fired at the officers first, injuring one of them and shooting at least 11 times at them.
The police accountability report said that a “review of video footage and initial reports appears to confirm that Mr. Reed fired first, striking the officer and four officers returned fire.”
Footage released from the incident shows police officers walking up to Reed in his vehicle and asking him to roll down his windows. Reed does not immediately respond, but eventually, he does and an officer asks him what he is doing. He then locks the door and rolls up the window, ignoring the commands of the officer to unlock and open the door. Then gunfire breaks out and two officers can be seen running from the car for cover as they are shot at. Reed was killed after officers responded to the gunfire.

P
That’s a lot of rounds.
Now he doesn’t have to roll the window down to get some air
They do stuff like that when they want all hell to break loose. And it is an election year!
5 officers emptying their 18 round magazines is pretty much the volume of fire.
Totally in line with the circumstances
So, he traded life for a simple ticket (or perhaps just a warning). I’m so sick of the media...is there any way they can be....oh, never mind. How soon before we reach the logical conclusion about media-cide?
Less than two mags each, I’m good with it.
I wonder if he had any priors ? Felon in possession, I see that is often the case with the local thugs. Was he intoxicated or did he chew lead paint as a kid ?
If he had played it cool he may have survived. However, I wonder if the cops were going to search the vehicle ?
Maybe, he was looking at some serious time.
Did they forget to say that he was black? Does anything else matter?
The article went out of their way to not say ‘plainclothes’ officers. 5 or 6 black guys pull over you in the street in a unmarked car and approach you I would think its either cops or another gang getting ready to kill you.
Thanks for that info, yeah he was probably going to jail.
The no sear belt infraction is a rather flimsy reason for stopping a motorist, imho.
Heck, where they have red light cameras , they just e-mail a video of the infraction, you pay, no points on license, no court. One could argue that running a red light is the greater hazard yet it is handled no fuss.
Fwiw, I saw three vehicles run a red light this afternoon, the intersection used to have a red light camera, since removed.
But if there is a warrant for his arrest, they are probably checking the license plate...
He had a felony warrant. He complied and pulled over. He shot first and the cops retreated. He didn’t try to drive away, he just sat there. The cops shot and killed him.
I think this was the outcome he wanted. This appears to me to be a suicide by cop.

the excerpt doesn’t seem to include the “key detail” alluded to in the headline
