Good post. Your rule #3 is particularly valuable: “If bad people are encountered, try to retreat.”
Too many folks feel the need to “teach the criminals a lesson”, or some such thing. Nope. That only works in the movies. And that’s the job of the police anyway. It’s not the job of a civilian.
Many years ago I went to a demonstration given by a karate master. Very tough guy. He went over his rules for self-defense. His #1 rule: “Don’t be there.”
In other words: If there’s trouble in Dodge, get outta Dodge.
Several problems are summed up in those two sentences.
1) We have invested professional police with the sole duty to keep the peace.
2) Our employees are not doing their jobs.
3) We view them as being somehow superior to us, when in fact they are our inferiors.
