Here are some sources explaining DeSantis’s role in Florida energy rate hikes. To summarize, four of the five members of the Florida Public Service Commission (PSC), the board which regulates utilities for the state of Florida, are DeSantis appointees. In October of 2021 the commission, approved a $5 billion dollar FPL rate increase, to be spread over four years.
FPL is also a large donor to Florida Republicans generally, and to DeSantis in particular. DeSantis had previously signed a 2020 law designed to force J.R. Kelly from his position as head of the Office of Public Counsel, an office whose role is to advocate for consumers during rate hike negotiations with utility companies. The removal of Kelly, known as a strong consumer advocate, allowed him to be replaced by Richard Gentry. Gentry subsequently, negotiated the FPL rate hike which was ultimately approved by the PSC.

The DeSantis-appointed PSC has also approved rate hikes for Tampa Electric and Duke Energy Florida, amounting to 9.8% and 15.1%, respectively.
