We all know the history of the Big Dig in Boston.
What is so virtuous about union membership? Is it some kind of religious organization, perhaps some form of a cult? Once having declared fealty to the sacred aspirations of union membership. what are the costs of apostasy? Are you to be scourged in the public square, or is there further divine punishment to be visited upon the backslider stretching into eternity?
She told me once that she did it to protect us. That if she didn't join the union "bad things" would happen.
Every few years we tightened our belts and had to budget things harsher than usual, because that was when the contract was expiring and a strike was possible.
Mom was a union member but she hated everything about it. I could tell stories about the corruption and ineptitude that she saw there.
Being around family members? Literally, hiring family members and nepotism.
Having 3 guys to do the work of one (guaranteed jobs and salaries, but screw getting the job done efficiently).
Getting time off the job when called to man a strike line for brother unions.
Guaranteed increases of pay and benefits when the union leadership strong-arms companies with threat of strikes.
WAS required to have union membership in 5 different unions when I was younger.
NEVER NEVER AGAIN
