California fast food workers stunned as restaurant closes without warning over $20 minimum wage: ‘Only the beginning’
New York Post ^ | April 4, 2024 | Kristen Altus

Another California small business and its workers have seemingly suffered at the hands of the state’s newly enacted $20 minimum wage.

...

When making their way to work Monday morning, Navarro and her team learned upon arrival that the restaurant owner had made the decision to close its doors for good.

The owner, Loren Wright, told local Fox affiliate KMPH that this was the “last thing” they wanted to do, but knew by Friday night the business likely wouldn’t be able to absorb the wage hike and didn’t “want to ruin their Easter Sunday.”

The new California statewide legislation went into effect Monday and enforces a $20 minimum wage for restaurants that have at least 60 locations nationwide, except those that make and sell their own bread.

...

“I can see their intentions with increasing the minimum wage, thinking that it will attract more people,” the ex-manager added, “but I honestly don’t think it will work. This is not the first business that’s closing. There’s already a few local businesses for me that are closing, so I feel like this is just only the beginning.”

Speaking on behalf of the now unemployed Fosters Freeze team, Navarro claimed they would have preferred working at a lower hourly rate than being laid off.

“From the people that I spoke to, my employees, we would have rather stayed at the wage that we did have before, just because now we don’t have a job,” Navarro said. “And those who are still working in the areas around us that went up to $20 an hour, they got their hours severely cut. And it’s a lot less people working on shifts. So their jobs got a lot more difficult.”

“Is there a greater example of the retarded thought process of liberals?”

Retarded is a SUBJECTIVE term. For us, a politician throwing thousands of people out of work is ‘retarded’. To a Democrat it is a SUCCESS STORY - as those people then become wards of the state and they will ALWAYS get their votes.

Dems get a twofer: The Republicans get cast as “Simon Legree” lamenting a MW COLA and the Dems also get goobers to vote for them.

“These indoctrinated morons think that all businesses are owned by people who are incredibly wealthy.”

No, they know better, because they are NOT DUMB. Instead they consider small business as their political enemy, and they want it ALL to be shut down, with Fast Food just being the tip of the iceberg.

Let me get this straight, Repulicans want to end welfare, SS and all entitlements. Fine. Then they want Americans to work and they want no min. (living) wage. R’s love imported labor (H-1B) and an open border ( cheap labor) So what R’s want is return to wage slavery?

“I think California wants people to stop eating at fast food places and eat healthier.”

First part you got right, but no, people WILL NOT eat healthier if they no longer can access fast food - they’ll be buying more processed junk from their supermarkets.

“If there is demand for the product he was selling SOMEONE will make will supply it.”

Agree...maybe supermarket deli stands or something like that, but it will be a small part of their business, more of a loss-leader for them. And Fast Food won’t stand a chance, except for the well-off.

“Hmm, no. What happens is this. There are 4 burger joints in the area. Now one closes ( because the owner has a paid off boat, a lake house and and a mistress), the other 3 joints get more business and can “afford” the new min wage. Just like the could “afford” the higher prices for almost EVRYTHING.”

EXACTLY why we cannot seem to govern, or even win elections.

Perhaps you don’t realize that this is a CONSERVATIVE forum?

Seems to me that someone needs to open a business where they supply a bread machine that makes just enough bread to get through the loop hole.

R’s certainly are not going for the lower income working class. That is for sure.

It applies to Franchises.

so McDonalds, which are mostly franchises, are affected even those a lot of them are just one independent operator of one location.

this is a foster’s freeze location, which is a franchise and the brand has more then 60 locations nationwide, and is thus affected.

Sad to see we have people here who just assume business owners are crooked/make loads of easy money and can take a hit on something like that, without having any idea of the reality of how it works.(not you, others who posted here)

an extra 12 dollars a hour for 3 employees at 8 hours a day is an extra 96 a day, not including the increase in payroll taxes.

that’s an extra 3k roughly a month in expenses, and That may have been that businesses’ entire profit for a month. Food does not have as good margins on profit as other industries.

I picked up something at a McDonalds a couple years ago. I gave the guy at the window something like 3 one-dollar bills, 2 quarters, 3 dimes, a nickle and 3 pennies.

The kid spread the money out on the counter and stared at it. I let him stare about five minutes before I told him that was the correct amount. He said, “Thanks, Man!” and gave me my receipt.

Could you refute what I am saying instead of your useless comment?

So conservatives are for wage slavery? Certainly Trump is not like that.

Thanks for that. I still say it violates the hell out of private business rights. The USSC claimed minimum wage was established to ensure each state’s businesses didn’t take advantage of another state, yet, no state should be allowed to stipulate minimum wages.

Minimum wage isn’t what a person has to be paid, it merely outlaws anything not worth that much money.

Only applies to restaurants with (60 or more) locations nation wide.
And what the hell is the justification for that?
Doesn’t even address Newsome’s absolute definition of corruption ‘unless making bread’ carveout for his friend/donor.
needs a rope and tree.
