MELROSE, Fla. (WCJB) - A man from Gainesville was shot multiple times in the chest, through a Bible, in a Stand Your Ground shooting after sheriff’s deputies say he harmed his baby and attacked bystanders.

Putnam County Sheriff’s Office officials say Jason Kaercher, 26, of Gainesville, began behaving erratically earlier this week. On Thursday, relatives took his 3-month-old baby to a home in Melrose off State Road 21 near the elementary school. Kaercher met with the family and a Department of Children and Families (DCF) case manager.

Kaercher took his wife and baby outside to get some air and moments later the case manager heard screaming. Kaercher was squeezing the baby hard enough to turn the child blue. He then began walking toward State Road 21 saying he was “God” while holding the baby and a Bible.

A family member grabbed a shovel and tried to convince him to release the baby. He then laid down on the roadway on top of the child and Bible. Eventually, he got up and the family member grabbed the baby.

Several vehicles, including a work crew, stopped on the road to avoid hitting him. The crew attempted to hold him down and the family member dropped the shovel. Kaercher broke free and grabbed the shovel.

He then jumped on top of a vehicle and began hitting and cracking the windshield. He approached a man in a truck, opened the door, and began beating the man with the shovel, breaking his arm. The shovel then broke and Kaercher discarded it. Another person grabbed the shovel and hit him.

The driver was then able to grab his gun to defend himself. As Kaecher approached him, holding the Bible, the driver fired multiple times, striking him in the chest through the book.

“I heard probably the fire truck and the ambulance three other times going different directions,” said Katrina Summerville, a neighbor. “I didn’t know there was shooting but it was bad - traffic was stopped, people slamming on their brakes.”

Kaercher was airlifted to a trauma center for treatment. The driver was also taken to the hospital for treatment of a broken arm and multiple cuts. The baby was taken to a pediatric emergency room.

The sheriff’s office is investigating the incident and charges are expected for Kaercher. Deputies say the driver fired his gun in self-defense and no charges are expected.

He is probably some degree of naturally crazy, although some of that is genetic and can’t be helped, I would be interested in knowing what type of parents this guy has, IMO the odds are his parents were on drugs from the time they were children, advanced on to other mind altering drugs all legal and combined with alcohol and other illegal drugs and then pass that on to children, it’s inevitable you will get lunatics as children.

Well, he’ll be able to say that the Bible saved his life...

I get HOT in the chest sometimes too.
It mostly happens IF I drink too much bourbon.

Didn’t Teddy Roosevelt get shot in the chest and survived because it hit his speech or some book he had in his pocket.

After which he said it takes more than one bullet to kill a bull moose.

Good thing he wasn’t holding a Koran?
All hell would have broken loose.
Yep. Good thing.

He had a 50 page speech in his pocket which absorbed some of the energy.

“The horrified audience in the Milwaukee Auditorium on October 14, 1912, gasped as the former president unbuttoned his vest to reveal his bloodstained shirt. “It takes more than that to kill a bull moose,” the wounded candidate assured them.”

He was shot with a .38 Colt revolver (model 1892). The 1892 was chambered in the .38 Long Colt, a predecessor to the .38 special. The .38 Long Colt fired a 150 grain bullet at about 750 fps.

It is a bit more powerful than the .38 S&W, with has a standard load of a 146 grain bullet at about 650 fps.

If you have a revolver chambered for .38 Long Colt, the tend to perform well with mild .38 S&W Special loads using hollow-based 148 grain wadcutter bullets. The hollowbased bullets expand to engage the rifling and produce good accuracy.
