Bush Cheney advisor Matthew Dowd went on MSNBC to say Trump would have been better off going for a federal 15-week ban.
I disagree. Calling for an immediate, national, 15-week abortion ban loses from both directions. On the one hand, you’re suggesting that most abortions are somehow morally justifiable. On the other hand, you’re still staking out a political position that doesn’t have clear majority support yet. Democrats woulda turn 2024 into a referendum on banning abortion, a vote they would likely win.
A 15-week ban would also undermine those states that have pursued and passed other, more pro-life policies.
Trump’s position remains morally clear, while allowing pro-life groups to keep fightingt to persuade Americans and get wins at the state level.
Trump has threaded the needle masterfully.

The 15-week ban was what I had hoped President Trump would propose but Charlie Kirk points out how that would undermine the states that have already acted on even stronger pro-life laws.
