Ostensibly to protect them from harm but actually so the Ukrainian military could have their now vacant houses to quarter their troops and to use as defensive positions. Yes, that likely slipped from your memory.

I was wondering why there was no mention of civilian casualties. The article said there was no escape. I wonder how many military people died?
