It’s the whole collaboration dynamic with France.
History shows that in WW2 they wholeheartedly and enthusiastically assisted with the “liquidations”.
Then afterwards they all claimed to have been in the resistance, which if true would have had France liberated without help but that’s a different story.
I recall a picture that illustrates France quite well.
It’s an image of some people during the fall of France to the Germans.
One man is crying, the woman in the middle -ish of the image is looking like “gee I dunno”, but there’s one guy who has this weird smug smirk as if he likes this brave new direction of the country.
The gee I dunnos and the I like this types always outnumbered the ones who disliked it.
France was never deanazified (and it shows)
