"The man on the right in the photo, the dead man, is not a civilian. His name was Nguyễn Văn Lém, a Viet Cong officer also known as Bảy Lốp. He was in charge of a death squad that was tasked to attack Vietnamese officers and their families. Shortly before his arrest, he had slaughtered Lieutenant Colonel Nguyen Tuan, his wife, his six children, and his 80-year-old mother. When the media reported this story, part of the American public became convinced that — after all — the man in uniform hadn’t done all that badly to pull the trigger."

The story about the situation leading to that execution, was not part of the TV news cycles.

The photo was splashed around by the liberal media and by the “student no more war!” rent-a-mobs, that together, comprised the made for TV “anti-war movement” - the movers and pot shakers who are now for more war.

As I said, the Vietnamese officers reaction was, on a personal level, completely understandable. However, it still was not according to the laws of civilized nations. The terrorist was already in custody and available to face formal justice.

The sole survivor of Lém’s alleged killing of Tuân’s family was Huan Nguyen; aged nine at the time, he was shot three times during the attack that killed his family and stayed with his mother for two hours as she bled to death.

In 2019, he became the highest-ranking Vietnamese-American officer in the U.S. military when he was promoted to the rank of rear admiral in the United States Navy.
