Baltimore port bridge collapse: Global ocean carriers put U.S. companies on hook for urgent cargo pickup

Ocean carriers are declaring “force majeure” due to the Baltimore port bridge crisis, telling logistics companies and U.S. shippers including retailers that once cargo is dropped off at alternate ports, it becomes their responsibility to pick up.

In an alert to customers Tuesday, CMA CGM wrote, “Those (containers) on the water will be discharged at an alternate port where they will be made available for pick-up, and CMA CGM’s bill of lading will terminate.”

It was the first ocean carrier to declare force majeure — the provision in a contract that frees parties from an obligation due to events beyond their control.

Imagine the frantic scrambling to re-route everything. But there are people who know how to handle these things, thank goodness.

Possibly the USA and the world will readjust to life without a port of Baltimore.

The Port of NYC was bigger by far, but it mostly went away in the 1960s without the
economy collapsing. That was due to the longshoreman's union keeping containers out
in the misguided belief they were protecting their jobs.

THIS. All the people claiming this was intentional from one long distance video have no clue how ships operate. They think it’s like driving a car.

So where were the tugboats?

They cast off when the ship began to pick up speed. Tugs apparently don’t like to be attached to a ship going fast. Bad things can happen if they can’t keep up.

One tug did head towards MS Dali when they heard the Mayday call, but were too late to stop the allision.

1000 ft ships don’t turn unless they are given rudder. There was no wind and the current is minimal running in the direction of the channel.

No power. They still don’t stop on a dime in a channel.
