Answer: Take about half the batteries out and convert all the EVs to hybrids, using a small hydrocarbon-fueled power unit driving an on-board generator, much like a miniature Diesel-electric locomotive.

Or, alternatively, develop a program of converting all these EVs to a hydrogen fuel-cell technology, and introduce a viable hydrogen economy, bypassing the batteries altogether.

Take out more like 75% of the batteries and you’ll have a good long-range plug-in hybrid. Put a diesel in there, and you can remove 85% of the batteries and still have the same range.

Oh, forgot, diesels are now essentially illegal in the US.
