You should retract fake news. Always. A good site allows a moderator to mark it, or you to edit it first and say it was wrong.
Allowing it to stay up will get others to go just react and think it’s real, without seeing it was wrong. That’s why X’s Community Notes is probably the best solution, even though that has and can be abused.
