Taiwan Confirms US Troops on Front-Line Islands Near China
Newsweek via MSN ^ | 3.19.2024 | Micah McCartney

Taiwan has confirmed there are U.S. troops stationed on its islands in the Taiwan Strait on a permanent basis, including an island just over a mile off China's southeast coast.

The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) in 2023 paved the way for their arrival to conduct training programs for troops on Taiwan's front line.

China has vowed to someday annex democratic Taiwan, which it regards as a rogue province, despite the fact that the Chinese Communist Party government in Beijing has never ruled there. China has sharply increased military sorties and drills in and around the 90-mile-wide Taiwan Strait, prompting its neighbor to boost investment in defense.

Asked to confirm reports U.S. Army Green Special Forces, also known as Green Berets, were in Taiwan on a permanent basis, Taiwanese defense chief Chiu Kuo-cheng told reporters on March 14: "No matter the situation, there may be blind spots or shortcomings. So we need to communicate with our allies—whether it is a team, a group or a country."

.. Taiwan's Defense Ministry has refrained from commenting on specific reports, but said all foreign military exchanges follow an annual plan.

U.S. Army Green Berets from the 1st Special Forces Group are now permanently stationed at a pair of bases of the 101st Amphibious Reconnaissance Battalion, a Taiwanese army special operations force, according to Taiwan's United Daily News (UDN).

These instructors were sent to the outlying island counties of Penghu and Kinmen. At its closest point, Kinmen is just barely over a mile from Chinese shores.

So you want to risk nuclear war over Taiwan? Because there’s no for other way of preventing China’s eventual takeover of Taiwan. I doubt there’s many Americans interested in fighting WW3 over Taiwan.

I’d love to have these troops on our border right now. It’s tough for me to get worked up about someone else’s security (even if it has an economic impact on our nation) when we have such egregious border controls as we have now.

It's our aggression and greed of our elite that has destroyed Ukraine.

Stop peddling lies.

There is no chance of winning a war in Taiwan against China. No one should want that because it result in Taiwan being turned into rubble.

If we let? Let Europe and Asia fix their own problems. Maybe Asia, India, and Australia ought to establish mutual-defense alliances. Same with Europe.

The author of Think and Grow Rich said in a lecture that the one thing he thinks was good about the Civil War-—only one-—is that when Great Britain was under attack by the Nazis there was a united country of the United States to come to their aid.

If you think about it, that’s not much. We have suffered terribly for all these decades because the Union won.
And I am a Michigander descended from Michiganders since my ancestors arrived from England, Scotland and Wales in the 1800s and one fought as a volunteer for the Union including some of the bloodiest battles. (He survived.)

The Chinese are extremely racist and would not want to takeover countries with non-Han people in them like the Philippines, Vietnam, etc.

Tell that to the Tibetans, Uighers, and Dzungars. Oh wait, the Dzungars were completely eliminated by the Chinese so no need to tell them.

Grimly funny.

One interviewed person on Ancient Aliens a couple of years ago said “We cannot tell, even if space aliens exist, if they are trying to hurt us or to help us. I have never seen any evidence that they are in any way helping us.”

To me, the Hollywood cliche of aliens intervening due to our nuclear bomb arsenal and so on is nonsensical. They could just as easily be preparing the dna banks to use to destroy us and replace us with no regard for us any more than we raise cattle and hogs for fast food chains.

>> If only we had followed George Washington about staying out
>> of foreign entanglements.

We are no longer a nation of planters, farmers, hunters/trappers and small shop artisans that we were in George Washington times.

We depend on global trade, oil and global information flow, all of the things that did not exist in the 18th century.

We will not be safe behind the two oceans if a hegemon arises either in Europe or in Asia.

For that reason we tacitly supported Japan waging a war against Imperial Russia in 1905 and smacked down Germany trying to rise to hegemon status, twice. Japan got the wrong idea from that war, also they tried the Perl Harbor thing for the 1st time in 1905 and thought it was a magic bullet.

Then we fought and contained the USSR in coalition with the West Europe.

In retrospect, should have probably listened more closely to George Kennan and Kissinger on post-Soviet arrangements in Eastern Europe, but alas that ship has sailed.

And we cannot allow anyone to use nuclear blackmail. Once you allow that, it will be done again and again.

Not sure if there are any good options at this point. Only bad and really bad.

There have probably been US troops on these islands off and on since 1949.

Ukraine, Taiwan and others are not worth all of us dying in a nuclear and EMP war.

Running away with our tail between our legs simply makes that more likely.

What worked for a small, remote country at the 18th Century doesn't necessarily work in the 21st: sometimes the foreigners want to tangle with you.

In addition, we haven't meddled with China: in fact, we've bent over backwards to treat them well since 1972. We wound up creating a monster. As Machiavelli argued, counting on gratitude in human affairs is simply foolish.

DC is looking ahead. The next catastrophe (for the hapless locals) is being lined up for the neocons and globohomos to blunder us into.

Our border isn't wide open because of a lack of troops.

“During WW II it was held but FDR won twice.”

Incumbents have an even bigger advantage in war time.

In retrospect, should have probably listened more closely to George Kennan and Kissinger on post-Soviet arrangements in Eastern Europe, but alas that ship has sailed.

That would always have been seen as appeasement from Moscow. A conflict was inevitable unless we were simply to concede a Russian sphere of influence over Eastern Europe.

Russia is just returning its historical mean as an empire whose internal elite are rewarded and legitimized by its barbaric population through killing and looting its neighbors.

Step away from the Risk board, please.

All these geniuses who've claimed to be able to "manage" geo-politics, have failed utterly.

God forbid we export our actual founding ideals. No, we meddle with the local politics of cultures that are nothing like ours, creating endless brush wars and instability, creating waves of displaced peoples.

And that's presuming this is being done by misguided incompetence, instead of deliberate malfeasance.
