MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexico’s president on Tuesday praised Mexican revolutionary Francisco “Pancho” Villa for his 1916 attack on Columbus, New Mexico, a raid that killed 18 Americans, mostly civilians.
President Andrés Manuel López Obrador called the attack “daring” and said “we should thank” Villa for it.
“We should thank Villa for, among other things, the daring feat of having attacked Columbus, New Mexico, to prevent what he considered acts of treason,” López Obrador said.
Mexico has long honored Villa in government textbooks and monuments, but that was for his domestic role in the 1910-17 Revolution that ousted dictator Porfirio Diaz. The Columbus attack was mostly related to Villa’s personal disputes, not the Revolution, and previous Mexican administrations had remained mostly silent about it.
López Obrador quoted his favorite historian, Pedro Salmerón, as saying the attack was “a symbol of resistance against imperialism.” It would not be the first time the president's fondness for Salmerón has caused problems.

Straight from the source, Colombia baby!
And he was rewarded by having his head cut off and it has been missing long since.
I thought Lefty killed him.
Killed an a rifle ambush. Then the supposed story is that Skull and Bones club at Yale dug up his grave and took his head.
Those are the sickos that run our nation. They lay in a coffin and tell their friends all their deviant sex stories, piss on each other and bark at the moon.
Bush was one, Kerry was one, Bush II was one, Prescott Bush, Henry Luce, half of the CIA etc. Sickos.
My grandfather served as a bugler for the First Arkansas Infantry during the Mexican Border War. It may have saved his life. By the time he got back and then shipped to France WWI had practically ended.
Agree. And, any US citizen found to be collaborating with the cartels should be stripped of citizenship and air-dropped into North Korea.
I’ve eaten at A LOT of small Mexican restaurants from California to DC. At least 50% of them have a picture of old Poncho hanging in them. He’s like general Lee to those folks …
Wow - your grandfather and mine were likely in the same unit on the border - however my grand pappy lost a finger chasing Poncho - never deployed to Europe.
Shut off all the federal money going to Mexico and this garbage will stop.
According to Pew Research, almost 29% of all Mexican citizens were in the US as of 2021. Today, probably fully one-third. That is turning out to be a successful invasion, defended by claims of racism if anyone objects. But, maybe we can find a modern-day Eisenhower to route them out and dump them back across the border. And a modern-day Pershing to secure the northern states to prevent further incursion into the US.
Or Charlie Askins on the border...
Ask me if I know Pancho Villa...
Did you have lunch with him today?
Yes. His first campaign.
[Woodrow Wilson was trying to play kingmaker]
That always works out so well.
I am reminded of John McCain, Hillary and Barack and “the Arab Spring”.....
Was his name George? Did he also choot a couple of Messkins with his Colt SAA .45?
Yep. General “Blackjack” Pershing was sent on a “Punitive Expedition” into Mexico with infantry, horse cavalry, and horse artillery.
Changed some Mexican minds about cross-border incursions.
“Don’t let it end like this... tell them I said something.” —Pancho Villa, as he lay dying from bullet wounds
“we should thank” Villa for it.***
It ended with Pershing invading Mexico. Eventually Pancho was murdered by his assassins, buried, then someone dug him up and cut off his head. Even Mexico was glad to get rid of him.
That is Pancho at the wheel. His body guard is hanging over the side.
