Doomsday prepping was once a concept people believed was reserved for conspiracy theorists and paranoid uncles, but fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic is leading more and more Americans to plan ahead in the event of a future catastrophe.
Amid a recovering supply chain, two brewing conflicts involving nuclear powers, hackers bent on compromising electric infrastructure, the possibility of solar flares and concerns about engineered bioweapons, Nelson said it is not unrealistic to look at the world today and say: How prepared am I to take care of my family?”
“Americans have this Armageddon-type thing where they think that there’s a secret space shuttle waiting to go get that meteor. You know, there’s always an answer somewhere. Somebody’s hidden something underground. And we’re good, right? We like to believe that our big government has got a solution for everything.”
But the truth, according to Nelson, is that while there are plans, there is no one-size-fits-all solution for any one-size problem, and the government cannot reasonably have a plan that accounts for everything.
Nelson calculated that if a freezer goes out, people will only have that food for three days. If the power goes out, Americans are now reduced to five days of food in their homes. A local suburban or urban area will also have about two weeks of food and has generators if the power goes out, but when people are dependent on storefronts, they will quickly be emptied out.
“In the event of even a temporary supply chain collapse, most homes are within two weeks of being entirely dependent on handouts from a government entity or non-government organization,” Nelson said.
“Anybody who doesn’t have 3 to 6 months of basic staples and food within your home, and the ability to grow a garden. Then what’s your plan? I mean,

That’s cool. Thank you for the recommendation!

“Immediately go on half ration or less. Get skinny as fast as everyone else or you will be suspect.”
If or when things get really bad... like with gangs coming to your home to rummage for things to take... I would recommend hiding stashes of food around your property... as if it were gold. Because it will be worth more than gold, if and when.
Also, I’ve been told that the military, under crisis conditions, would be tasked with rounding up food and rations for them to continue their mission. That means that they could come in and “confiscate” your food. If you think I’m kidding, look it up. It’s part of their national security contingency plans for when the real SHTF.

The key word is: doomsday
That suggest a little more than being ready for several weeks..or even month.. of economic upheaval.
DOOM...👀

“Catastrophic event”
No, the keyword is prepper.
If you start a conversation about preparing for the end of the world then it would be an entirely different conversation and people would be preparing for it in an entirely different way.
A lot of preppers prepare for a catastrophic event, I personally think in terms of a minimum of 3 years of preparations is a good measure although if rich or so situated I would go for 10 years.
Getting hung up on the Road Warrior stuff is a distraction from most useful prepper discussions, just as were all the years of survivalist discussions getting hijacked by turning them into arguments about how many guns and of what type, for decades almost every survival discussion immediately went to guns and shootouts.
I have to say ..I don’t know what this road warrior stuff you keep mentioning.
Don’t own a tv and I haven’t been to a movie in over 20 years.
I’m going by what I’ve read long before the internet consumed the world.
And more recent events which I have gleamed from the internet.
And what makes the most sense in a catastrophic doomsday situation...
for a inkling consider the people that loot for much less of a reason(x 10..x50 in a shtf situation)
BTW I suspect you would shoot a looter tring to get into you’re 3-5 year supply?
I don’t know what your posts are about, I agreed with your post 21 and now you are off on some weird tangent.
Actually it was this sentence from your post 21 that I was defending—””Also, vices (sugar, tobacky, booze) will be worth more than gold.”” not the whole post.
When I posted post 55 I was talking about valuable prepper goods and wasn’t paying enough attention to notice that you were also a big drama/movie post-apocalypse guy.
To get back on track I get now that you are mostly in agreement with Harmless.
I think this may be a whatever situation.
When anyone refers to DOOMSDAY prepping..not to be confused with having enough supplies to get by for awhile...they usually mean WORST CASE SCENARIO.
Don’t use the word DOOMSDAY..unless you mean DOOMSDAY.
given the sign of the times ..it not difficult to imagine very bad stuff..looting ..killing..etc.
That was really my point overall.
That is: most people are not prepared for the absolute worst.
Or,they choose to ignore the worst and gamble that DOOMSDAY won’t be to bad?
But then you wind up becoming a zombie.😱
