Former Major League Baseball slugger Steve Garvey has moved ahead of U.S. Rep. Adam Schiff in California’s U.S. Senate primary – a significant feat despite the November runoff having already been determined.
As of Wednesday morning, Garvey led Schiff by an incredibly slim margin of just 4,801 votes with more than 5 million votes tallied, about 85% of expected returns.
Schiff, one of the leading Democrats in the U.S. House, will face Garvey, a Republican, in November to determine who succeeds the late Sen. Dianne Feinstein. California puts all candidates, regardless of party, on the same primary ballot, and the two who get the most votes advance to the general election.
Whether Garvey retains the lead remains to be seen. However, the former Los Angeles Dodgers and San Diego Padres star is attempting to seize the moment.
A Republican hasn’t won a statewide race for any office in California since 2006.

Before or after the Beltway curve trajectory insertion changes the winner.
It’s nice for the moment. I hope it holds.
Irrelevant. Top two.
Meaningless, Schiff will get between 55-60% in the general election
Oh yes please get rid of Schiff.
Gee. Really???
It’s up to Garvey, whether to take the ‘high road’ or whether to show pretty much ANY inner city in California and say something to the effect “this will come to your neighborhood too”.
So, he can “Lose with Dignity”, which NeverTrumpers prefer, BY DEFINITION, or he can actually try to win.
His choice.
He could be Ronald Reagan and he’ll still get only 46% of the vote.
I agree, schiffhead needs to be sent packing.
7 days ago & they are still counting???
Election officials have until April 4 for final count????
How soon before Ruby Freeman or her daughter (blonde braids lady) find more votes for Schitt?
7 days ago & they are still counting???
Californians are so proud of what is going on in their state.
It’s a dang shame Tommy LaSorda isn’t still alive to campaign with Garvey.
If 4800 votes is the difference in November, Pencil neck Schiff will find that many votes in the men’s room waste basket of some random San Fran precinct by 11 pm on election night
Yeah, Garvey does not have a chance in the general election. There were two other Democrats on the ballot who also got lots of votes in primary. Garvey and Schiff (D) both got about 2 million votes. Katie Porter (D) got about one million. Barbara Jackson (D) got about 500,000 votes. Most of their votes will go to Schiff in the general election.
It’s nice for the moment. I hope it holds.
><
You beat me to it.
It would be something for Schiff to be beat by a Republican.
In other related butthead news, Congressman Steve Cohens house just caught fire in his garage due to a vehicle burning inside while the house was unoccupied.
