100 thousand dead. And we didn't improve the situation. We made the situation worse. WWII was necessary (and just). Maybe it would not have happened if we did not get involved in WWI.
That last is an interesting speculation, and years ago I read online some interesting “alternate timelines” that pursued it.
IMO, the thing is, the basic forces and “currents”, if you will, cannot be easily denied a path to the future. It’s like trying to prevent the Mississippi River System from flowing to the Gulf of Mexico. You might be able to alter and optimize some details or timing, maybe even with great effort shift the river east or west by a state width, but that’s about it. Or maybe trying to stop a large volcanic eruption is a better analogy?
The situation in Europe in the early 1900’s was not sustainable or stable. It just wasn’t. Hell, Europe was never stable for long except maybe for the period when it was firmly under the control of the Roman Empire. The Germans in particular were still highly militaristic, and if the US hadn’t been drawn into WW1, there is nothing to suggest the Germans would have post WW1 been less militaristic. If anything they’d have come out in better shape and less inclined to change. Trade resentment (as it actually occurred) for a different delusion? The economic upheaval would have still occurred, and most everything revolving around communism and socialism (including national socialism) would have been rather similar. You might not get a focused, savage, large scale campaign against the Jews, but that’s not needed to have a recipe that blows up again. All the major ingredients were there.
It’s a somewhat different situation in 2024, but, it is highly dangerous, and not just because of Putin either...
