Are there very nice parts of Haiti like many other countries which have troubled areas in them? Or is it all pretty destitute?

There are no nice parts in Haiti. No vacation spots for Westerners. The entire country is in shambles.

That is sad. It might have helped them if they had some hard foreign cash producing tourist resorts there. They could focus on protecting those and the cash flow from.
Might have given them a base to start from in rebuilding the rest of the country. .
