I read in first grade in 1967. All three of my children were READING in kindergarten. Their brains absolutely could comprehend that they were reading. It's not that hard.

I had an amazing kindergarten teacher, at a Christian school. She taught us to read so well that by the time I graduated I was reading at a second grade level.
By the time I was in second grade I was reading at a college level.
Our teachers were big on phonics. They really encouraged us to read beyond what was expected of us at that age.
Reading early... and reading well... is absolutely possible.
