AUSTIN, Texas —

Texas House Speaker Dade Phelan has been forced into a runoff for the Republican nomination in his East Texas district by challenger David Covey, highlighting a fierce campaign by state Attorney General Ken Paxton to oust dozens of GOP incumbents who sought his impeachment last year.

Phelan advanced to a May 28 runoff against Covey, an oil and gas consultant and party activist endorsed by Paxton and former President Donald Trump. Neither candidate could win a majority for victory outright in a race that included retired hairdresser Alicia Davis.

"With all precincts reporting, Covey led with 46% of the vote, compared with Phelan’s 43% in the three-county Beaumont-area district. Alicia Davis, who did little campaigning, had about 10%, according to unofficial results. Because no candidate received more than half of the votes, the top two finishers head to a May 28 runoff." I just heard Paxton say that the more conservative candidates in Texas, typically win runoffs by a wide margin, because conservative voters are more motivated than the moderate voters. I think Dade is done.

That’s good to hear … I will do everything I can, to defeat Drunk Phelan and support Covey … and, I am no where near Beaumont.

I wonder how much Drunk Phelan’s backers paid Alicia the Retired Hairdresser to enter the race.

Alicia the Spoiler, Retired Hairdresser.

Trying to find an UNBIASED report on Paxton’s endorsements … could only find a wishy washy article by KERA News…that wasn’t even clear on the wins/losses of those he endorsed.

If anyone finds something, on this, please ping.

Here is one Paxton endorsed winner article …

Found a decent article ... on Gov Abbott/AG Paxton/Pres Trump endorsement WINS, in the Texas Tribune, of all places ....

https://www.texastribune.org/2024/03/05/greg-abbott-ken-paxton-texas-house-incumbents-lose/

FTA ...

Among those candidates who appeared to have lost outright: Steve Allison of San Antonio, Ernest Bailes of Shepherd, Travis Clardy of Nacogdoches, Jill Dutton of Ben Wheeler, Jacey Jetton of Richmond, Glenn Rogers of Graford, Hugh Shine of Temple, Reggie Smith of Sherman and Kronda Thimesch of Lewisville. Thimesh lost her election by less than 300 votes putting her within the margin for a recount.

The eight members who appeared likely to face runoffs are Phelan, DeWayne Burns of Cleburne, Justin Holland of Rockwall, Stephanie Klick of Fort Worth, John Kuempel of Seguin, Frederick Frazier of McKinney, Lynn Stucky of Denton and Gary VanDeaver of New Boston. The runoff is May 28.

Among the casualties, Burns, Kuempel, Smith and Klick were committee chairs. Shine and Clardy each have served six terms.

The results suggest that Abbott is within striking distance of compiling a House membership that will allow public funding to be spent on private schools. For years, rural House Republicans have stood as a firewall blocking such legislation from passing in Texas.
