We do the same kind of thing, in my family...give a name or middle name for an ancestor or living relative; if the son doesn't get his father's name. :-)

It's a nice remembrance and keeps the name ( and person ), alive!

Jews, among others, give newborn children the name of recently deceased relative. Considered bad luck to name a child after a living relative, such as ‘Junior’. At least change the middle name.
