How Russia war-gamed a Chinese invasion
Financial Times ^

Posted on 02/29/2024 6:09:28 PM PST by Brilliant

Angry mobs clashing with police in eastern cities. Networks of saboteurs smuggling arms across the border for attacks on police stations and military barracks. A resentful nuclear power boosting defence production as it accuses its neighbour of ethnic cleansing.

These all sound like Russia’s playbook when it first invaded Ukraine in 2014, then launched a full-scale war in 2022. But the storylines are all from Russian military training exercises based on a hypothetical Chinese invasion of its far east.

The war games, which were written by Russian officers between 2008 and 2014 and leaked to the Financial Times, offer an extraordinary window on the army’s long-standing fears about Beijing’s real intentions, according to experts who reviewed the files.

As well as offering unprecedented detail on Russia’s nuclear doctrine, they recount years of exercises rehearsing a possible Chinese invasion, revealing the military establishment’s deep suspicion of Beijing even as leaders Vladimir Putin and Xi Jinping began forging a “no limits” partnership…

What’s your point? Of course, they each war gamed the possibility of war between Russia and China. Why is that so hard to understand? After the collapse of the monolithic communist movement, they were in as much a Cold War between each other as we were with each of them. This is what Kissinger was up to when he reached out to the Chicoms, driving that wedge deeper. I’ll clue you in on another news blast, we’ve war gamed the possibility of war with each of them. The cozy relationship we’ve driven them into is not the norm.

Russia is in a much better position than us re: the Chinese. They’re numbers are growing here.

In 1969 China and Russia had a border war that almost went nuclear. It was shortly after that that Kissinger went to China

if that freaks you out, you might want to peak at some of the war gaming involving American citizens.

Beat me by a few…good job! I worked with an ex-Soviet officer who emigrated here after the wall fell and he told me about the war. Crazy stuff! Much bigger than the west reports.

We both made the same mistake. 1969 was China vs Soviet Union.

Gonna be awesome.

“Ukraine is draining Russia. China needs Siberian resources.

This is really stupid. Why would anyone cheer this? A China with Siberia would be a bigger threat to us than Russia could ever be.

If it doesn’t bother me why should it bother you? We have say over this?

You’d think that Putin would be a little more concerned about it than he is. I think that a good strategy to bring the Ukraine war to an end might be to feed a little Russian paranoia about a potential Chinese invasion. They really have much more to fear from China than they do from Nato.

The Economist is a house organ for the British version of the Deep State. It serves the same purpose for Britain that The Atlantic does for the United States. The Western powers are hoping for a Sino-Russian split, so that the potential challenge from these powers, aligned with Iran and the Communist and radical Muslim nations in Latin America and Africa, will be dissipated.

Unfortunately, some on the Right have fallen for a deception and hold to the position that Russia is "good" (pro-Christian and pro-family) and Red China is "bad" (aligned with the Western oligarchs). Alt-right, neocon and leftist media ignore abundant evidence of cooperation between Russia and China, as well as both nations supporting Communist nations in Latin America and Africa. The Chinese Belt and Road initiative is making deep penetrations into Asian, African, and Latin American nations in an attempt to displace American and other Western economic ties. Russian mercenary outfits have been involved in supporting coups in West Africa to displace pro-French governments.

China and Russia both have significant weaknesses. The state-dominated Red Chinese economy is suffering a real estate bust due to politically motivated malinvestment, fear by Western investors of the CCP turning on their stakes in Chinese companies, and market competition from less arbitrary Asian governments. Russia has proven incapable of defeating Ukraine despite being much larger in population and resources. While Moscow has evaded the worst effects of the Western embargoes due to using China, India, and other countries to evade the sanctions, the embargoes have had an impact, All of Europe, with five exceptions (Switzerland, Austria, Ireland, Bosnia-Herzegovina and Serbia) are now NATO members. Of the five nations listed, only Serbia is a possible friend to Russia.

Let’s see. 1969-border skirmish.
1971-2. Kissinger visits China-leads to ping-pong diplomacy.

It appears we gave too much to China. Created a monster.

Whether the border skirmish was real, it fooled Nixon and Kissinger to recognize Red China to pull them away from the Soviets. With the death of Mao and China making limited market reforms, the stage was set for industrial growth of China.

Carter didn’t need to recognize the PRC as the US didn’t need China. Clinton didn’t have to give them MFN status. Think Loral.

Then came the Bush’s.
