....When their eleventh studio album The Works - produced by Queen and Mack - was released in the UK on February 27th, 1984, fans and critics alike hailed it as Queen's return to their rock roots and to the traditional Queen sound absent from the previous album. Record Mirror described it as ‘Another jewel in the crown’.
For the first time the band started the new recordings in Los Angeles in August 1983 and finished at Musicland studios in Germany early the following year. Worth a listen. Prescient was the song "Machines (Back to Humans)" that laments the idolatry of technology.
The Works is a great album, and a needed corrective after Hot Space.
Sorry, but I just can’t like a group fronted by such a flaming ho#o. Same for REM.
“I Want To Break Free” is the gayest musical video ever.
That’s why Queen’s popularity in the US faded, while they were still popular everywhere else.
The name "Queen" has always been a turn-off for me. Never heard of REM, but perhaps that's just as well.
That’s too bad, because the music is fabulous. 😀
But Freddie is so brave! Puke...
I used to like REM a lot before Stipe went all homo and political.
I can't say I remember it, but it didn't destroy their careers, unlike Billy Squier's "Rock Me Tonight."
I don’t know if they ever toured in the US in the 80s after that.
I saw them live back in the day. Phenomenal performers. Freddy was at the top of his game.

Their music was pretty good, but they lacked the “I want to be like them factor”. Everyone wanted to be like the Beatles, or some other “rockers”, not many self respecting men wanted to be like Freddy Mercury, at least not in my circles.
Freddie was a powerhouse rock singer though. A lot of men might like to have his rock voice.
