Yes, agree.
I feel similarly about the RNC.
Sometimes organizations outlive their natural lives and die.
A long, long time ago, I belonged to the NRA. I remember reading on the pages of Shotgun News statements asking people to vote for certain Board of Directors to change the focus of the NRA.
I also remember looking forward to getting the NRA monthly magazine, usually with a feature on how to take down or modify some military surplus rifle along with wonderful advertisements about all the surplus arms you could buy.
I remember feeling that the magazine became worthless to my interests and then they gave me a magazine, I enjoyed, American Hunter.
Don't get me wrong, the NRA, through its affiliate organizations, does a great job teaching firearm safety and hunter education. It also does a good job associated with marksmanship programs. Wayne La Pierre and many of the existing Board of Directors should go. It is great that Wayne has stepped down.
I would like to see the NRA reshape its mission to that of a lean low overhead organization that runs a museum, sponsors some shooting, safety, and education programs, and becomes a noted authority on firearms facts and safety. I would prefer that they leave the lobbying to smaller state and affiliate groups. I would prefer that those groups form coalitions to legally challenge legislation that violates our civil rights under the Bill of Rights.
I now belong to a number of NRA affiliate groups and some other advocacy groups. When I get an email from the NRA (they have never stopped asking for money, even though it has been decades since I was last a member), I do write to legislators and oppose certain anti-second-amendment legislation.
The NRA has burned its bridges with me. We have known for a long time the extravagant lifestyle of Wayne. Yes, part of his job was to serve as a lighting rod to attract the wrath of gun control advocates, but his job wasn't to fund his lifestyle with member dues money. I also don't trust the current Board of Directors.
