This really is a thing. I made certain that I led my mother going down the stairs and followed her behind the stairs (issues due to incurable illness affecting balance). Considering that she was pretty large, I did not expect to survive a fall by my mom uninjured, but at least I would break/slow a fall. I caught myself doing the same thing for a friend recently, who was weaked by cancer and chemo.
I had the same policy with my dad. Then at the end of a long day I made the mistake of getting on an up escalator ahead of him.
Fortunately a young lady happened to be several steps behind him, else he would have tumbled the full length of a very tall escalator.
