The election board subpoenaed True the Vote to provide evidence that would assist it in investigating the group's ballot trafficking allegations.

In other words, True The Vote wasn't ready to present its evidence, or didn't trust Ratburger to act properly, or feared retaliation. They therefore asserted a journalist's First Amendment defense to Ratburger's attempt to learn of their whistleblowers. Ratburger went to court to find out what they know about his fraud operation.

Over years of opposition research, I learned that whispers and rumors about the opposition were often hard to either prove or disprove — especially the most enticing ones. Unless you paid close attention to standards of evidence and proof, you could be led down endless rabbit trails.
